WHIRLWIND typeface
2025, Adobe Illustrator
About the project
This project explores typography and music through the creation of an all-ages festival built around a custom typeface. Using Mala Condensed Bold as a base, I designed Whirlwind, refining its condensed structure with sharp, square slab serifs and simplified details to create a bold, western-inspired look.
The visual direction was guided by research into a specific music genre, Tex-Mex (Tejano music) shaping the festival’s identity, logotype, and promotional materials. The final outcome includes a cohesive branding system, three performance posters, and a type specimen book showcasing the typeface in use.

FINAL LOGO
The Tejano Revival logo uses the custom Whirlwind typeface to create a bold, western-inspired identity. Its strong slab serifs and condensed structure give it a clean, confident presence while keeping the focus on the typography.
MUSIC FESTIVAL POSTERS
The poster series extends the visual identity established by the logo, applying the Whirlwind typeface across a set of promotional designs for a Tejano music festival for all ages. Inspired by the Tejano music genre, the posters carry forward the bold, western-influenced aesthetic while incorporating visual elements and energy drawn from the genre’s cultural and musical style.
